League of Legends: Why Riot should be catering to noobs
I’m 28 minutes into my fourth ever match of League of Legends when it happens. Another player lets me know that I “is noob” and “suck ballz. And I was terrible that round. I had 1 kill, 11 deaths and 8 assists in a minute match ending in a miserable defeat. I was roughly five hours into learning League of Legends as a complete neophyte to MOBAs and I experienced the oft mentioned toxicity firsthand. I played six more matches and experienced one more act of toxicity.

The Elo [a] rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. The last two pvp I placed top Started this pvp out with a good start and have since lost games. I have consistently gone up against much higher tier players. Need better matchmaking based on skills! How long you have been playing is not really a direct factor when it comes to matchmaking. Your performance during previous PvP seasons does play a role.

However, there are some adjustments to be made to make sure this is the best experience for all. We were listening to your feedback and we could see some players were not happy with our Matchmaking system. Players of different skills with monsters of different levels ended up in the same league and that made it super easy for some, and super hard for others.
This is caused by the Skill distribution in our previous system, but we are actively looking for the best way to solve it. We want our multiplayer to be a fair and engaging feature, and to make sure we get it right, you can expect some changes in trophy acquisition rates and overall balancing. We want it to be dynamic and we want to keep you on your toes, always providing a challenge, but a reasonable challenge. We will be changing some elements here and there to find the perfect balance, so expect some iterations every now and then.

This week, Destiny 2 developer Bungie gave players their first look at the new Crucible ranking system coming with the May 8th update. However, while the addition of ranks to Crucible play is a great step towards incentivizing PvP fans to keep coming back, it also highlights a major flaw with Destiny 2 at present. Valor ranks earned via the casual playlist are a non-issue because there is no penalty for losing as players rank up, but Glory rank earned via the competitive playlist is influenced by wins and losses.

Matchmaking is the existing automated process in League of Legends that matches a player to and against other players in games. The system estimates how good a player is based on whom the player beats and to whom the player loses. It knows pre-made teams are an advantage, so it gives pre-made teams tougher opponents than if each player had queued alone or other premades of a similar total skill level Riot Games Inc. The basic concept is that the system over time understands how strong of a player you are, and attempts to place you in games with people of the same strength.
As much as possible, the game tries to create matches that are a coin flip between players who are about the same skill. The Matchmaking System works along with a modified version of the Elo system. Ask Riot gets a lot of questions about how we decide on your teammates and opponents in League, and we wanted to take some of the frequently asked ones and give them to the designers that work on matchmaking, champion select, position select, and all that good stuff. In terms of design, we want League to be a game where getting a small advantage and running with it is one path to victory. Any small successes that are snowballed can determine early leads, and then sometimes the result of the game.
Being wrecked is much more visceral than the joy of dominating your opponent, and the really bad moments can unfortunately be more memorable than the great ones. While we know our matchmaking systems are never going to be perfect, and sometimes you or your opponent will end up with a 20 minute win, we try everything we can to prevent imbalance before the game has even started, and consider it a huge priority to ensuring League remains competitive.
We think this is the right tradeoff compared to having a volatile rank—being demoted feels rough, and reaching a tier should be a decent indication that you can play at that level. Our perspective on the queues is that ranked should continue to be where you put on your tryhard pants. In contrast, unranked queues should be a place to play and experiment in a less intense competitive setting.
Beyond this, we want to provide an outlet for experimentation and lower stakes through unranked modes.
