1969 Fender Bandmaster Reverb TFL5005D Vintage Silverface Tube Amplifier Head w/ RCA Tube Set
The Bandmaster came with many different circuits during the blackface and silverface eras. The silverface Bandmaster amps got a 5U4GB tube rectifier and the vibrato channel got reverb. Due to this the silverface Bandmaster Reverb is less powerful, has less attack and breaks up earlier than the blackface Bandmaster. It reminds us more of a classic 80w Twin Reverb than a Bandmaster Reverb, and it shared its circuit design with the Pro Reverb and Super Reverb at that time. The reverb amps will start to break up around on the volume knob while the non-reverb amps stay clean to approx This is caused by the lack of gain stage in the reverb recovery circuit which contributes to tube distortion and compression in the preamp section when the amp is pushed. They are similar in the way that both are clean sounding with just one 12ax7 tube in the preamp stage vibrato ch in bandmaster and normal channel in bassman. The vibrato channel in the Bandmaster is even more clean than the Bassman because of the vibrato circuitry loading the signal chain and reducing the gain level in the premp section.

It’s pretty easy to “blackface” these amps for a full generational regression. I usually prefer switchable mods that allow me to go back to the amp’s original circuit and tone. The often unused Normal channel is also a great place to mod away with to make that channel interesting and usable. Fender made the head cab extra large to allow for distance between the power transformer and the reverb tank.

During eighteen years spent in playing music for the masses, twelve years in the service of the United States and six in that of the general public, many curious and interesting incidents have come under my observation. While conductor of the Marine Band, which plays at all the state functions given by the President at the Executive Mansion, I saw much of the social life of the White House and was brought into more or less direct contact with all the executives under whom I had the honor of successively serving—Presidents Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland and Harrison.
They were all very appreciative of music, and in this respect were quite unlike General Grant, of whom it is said that he knew only two tunes, one of which was “Yankee Doodle” and the other wasn’t! I think I may say that more than one President, relieved from the onerous duties of a great reception, has found rest by sitting quietly in the corner of a convenient room and listening to the music.
Once, on the occasion of a state dinner, President Arthur came to the door of the main lobby of the White House, where the Marine Band was always stationed, and beckoning me to his side asked me to play the “Cachuca. I’m sure you can; now give us the ‘Cachuca.

However, the first drip-edge models appeared in late August of as the black-face cosmetics were being replaced by silver-faced amps. The most popular amps, like the Deluxe Reverb, were the first to receive the new look, which included not only the silver face-plate and aluminum drip-edge, but also a slightly different grill cloth with added subtle vertical blue stripes. A few models during this early silverface period actually have the new silver face-plate and the old blackface style back-plate, and the earliest silver faceplates have the mysterious slim black vertical lines more on this later.
It makes sense that the amps that were not selling as well were the last to receive the new look, as they were the models for which the old black-face parts lasted the longest, and inversely the most popular models were the first to get the update, as their black-face parts ran out the earliest. What does this mean? It means that you may see a drip-edge Deluxe Reverb with a build date as early as mid, and a black-face non-reverb bandmaster or Vibrolux as late as February of Now, as for when the drip-edge was eliminated.
Once again, the most popular models were the first to lose the aluminum trim in mid and the least popular were the last to lose it in late , with the Bandmaster Reverb TFLD as the very last. By January of all fender amps being produced were the more common non-drip edge silverface models, those cosmetics continued on unchanged through the entire decade. Got it? There is no clear consensus as to why these lines exist; they appear just before the Volume controls and on either side of the amps name.
They are non-symmetrical both vertically as well as horizontally and are extremely thin compared to all other lines. Many believe they were lay-out reference lines that were never intended to make it into production; that makes sense since they only appeared for about the first months.
